Application Process

University Students & Accounting Technicians

As a student working towards your CA designation, you would typically join one of our audit groups where the majority of your work would be on audit files and larger non-audit files. We understand that support for students is critical during the process of obtaining your CA designation. From preparation for the Core Knowledge Exam to writing the Uniform Evaluation (UFE), our training programs are designed to help you maximize your chances of success. After obtaining your CA designation, you may consider a change in your career path to a full-time career in another specialty such as tax, or business valuations.

As an accounting technician, you would be assigned to our accounting group where you would focus on accounting services, preparation of financial statements and corporate tax returns.

On either career path, you would receive broad exposure to personal and corporate income taxes, business advice and to other special assignments being undertaken by your clients.

To exemplify the breadth of experience you would gain by starting your career at MacGillivray, consider the following list of services you would provide to our clients during your first year of employment:

  • Preparation of files for Audit, Review and Compilation clients
  • Full responsibility and ownership of files from preparation to completion
  • Preparation of Financial Statements
  • Audit testing including balance sheet and income statement accounts
  • Preparation of Corporate tax returns
  • Preparation of Personal tax returns including business and rental schedules
  • Hands-on experience communicating with clients

New CA (Potential Manager)

The scope of work of a Chartered Accountant with less than two years experience typically concentrates on (but is not limited to) either the areas of audit and accounting, or taxation. Reporting to a manager or partner, you would work on a wide variety of projects for primarily private sector clients. You would have the ability to work independently in a team environment. You would develop strong communication and client service skills as you progress towards Manager level.

Manager (Potential Principal or Partner)

A CA Manager at MacGillivray has approximately 3 to 5 years of experience, with a focus in either audit and accounting or tax services.  Overseeing a team of CAs, students and technicians, you would manage projects and act as a liaison between the clients and Partners. By this point, you would have excellent communication skills and strong organizational and time management skills.

Principal

A Principal at MacGillivray shares in all the responsibilities of partnership, without the risk and commitment of ownership. Principals perform the highest levels of work, but enjoy a more flexible life/work balance.

Partner/Owner

A Partner at MacGillivray is responsible for the well being of all staff including providing appropriate training and supervision, a good work/life balance, and a suitable and enjoyable work environment.  As a Partner, you would be the main communication link with our clients and you would enjoy the truly diverse nature of our business.  A Partner at MacGillivray would be involved in providing the following services to our clients:
